What You Should Do After A Loved One Dies As The Result of Another’s Negligence or Wrongful Act:
- Promptly contact a lawyer.
- Take photographs of the damage to your loved one’s vehicle if an auto accident. Use a digital camera and put the images on a compact disc or if using a 35mm camera, keep the negatives.
- Keep copies of all bills incurred, obituaries, and any other written materials relating to the funeral.
- Make a list of the names and addresses of people who may have witnessed the event that led to the death.
- Draw a diagram of what happened while it is fresh in your mind.
- Keep a "pain diary" describing your emotional and other problems that you experience each day.
- Do not discuss the collision with insurance companies or other parties until you have talked to your lawyer.
